Education

Nery Gabriela Martha Aguilar received her B. Sc (2015) and Master degree (2017) in Chemistry from the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla in México. In both, her BSc and master, she worked in the group of Dr. Delia López Velázquez (Laboratory of Polymer of the Chemical Sciences Faculty) specializing in the design, synthesis, and characterization of polymeric systems, particularly polystyrene copolymers. During her master, she did a research internship at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP-CSIC) in Madrid, Spain in Dr. Ernesto Perez Tabernero's group.
After her master (2017), she joined the group of Dr. Ulises Salazar Kuri (Laboratory of Ferroic Materials Growth) at the Luis Rivera Terrazas Institute of Physics (IFUAP) in México, where she worked on biopolymers extraction (cellulose and chitosan), magnetic and noble-based metal nanoparticles' synthesis and polymer nanocomposites preparation.
In 2023, Nery obtained her PhD with CUM LAUDE distinction working in the group of Dr. Brenda L. Sánchez Gaytán and Dr. Guillermo Soriano Moro (Laboratory of Applied Bioinorganic) at Sciences Institute-Chemistry Center (ICUAP) of Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla. During her PhD, the doctor explored the chemical modification of polyacrylamide polymers and their use as assistants in the formation of plasmonic nanoparticles (Au and Ag). Likewise, she prepared thermoresponsive block copolymers using Reversible Addition Fragmentation chain Transfer polymerization (RAFT) for the design of optical sensors. Importantly, she postulated a novel and interesting process related to plasmonic chemistry for induced polymerization and cross-linking process, which is already in the process of being patented in Mexico.
Dr. Nery M. Aguilar began her postdoc in June 2024 in the Hybrid Materials for Energy group at POLYMAT, managed by Dr. Irune Villaluenga.

Research

Her research interests include the synthesis of innovative polymeric materials, particularly copolymers, exploring diverse polymerization pathways. Likewise, the design of novel nanocomposite materials using polymers (biopolymers and synthetic polymers) and inorganic nanoparticles, especially noble metal-based and magnetic nanostructures.
Currently, Dr. Nery is working on yield block copolymers for potential applications in batteries.
