Mr. Aleksandar Sladojevic will defend his PhD thesis, “Mechanisms, Kinetics and Control of Oxidation Processes Involving Vinyl and Acrylic Monomers,” on February 18th at 10:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Joxe Mari Korta Building. School visits for 2026 have already started at POLYMAT. This week, we are welcoming students from Arizmendi Ikastola (Arrasate) as part of the Ikastola’s project-based learning approach. One of their annual projects focuses on developing a cream, making POLYMAT a perfect fit due to our extensive research on emulsions. During the visit, students attend a short introductory talk in our auditorium, followed by hands-on laboratory activities where they prepare an emulsion using water and oil, observe images obtained with the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and visit the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) facilities. Last week, POLYMAT researchers (Aitor Barquero, Edurne González Gándara, Jose Ramon Leiza, Mario Martinez Yubero and Sara Rubio Murillo) were in Mutriku coating the floaters of the floating photovoltaic prototype developed within the NaturSea-PV project. The floaters were protected with bio-based, waterborne polymer coatings developed by the Polymerization Processes Group, specifically designed to withstand harsh marine conditions. Read more

From September 9th to 13th, we had the privilege of hosting the Emulsion Polymerization Processes Course in the stunning city of Donostia-San Sebastián. This year's event brought together 47 attendees from 12 different countries, creating an enriching and diverse learning environment.

Participants had the opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of emulsion polymerization, expanding their knowledge and exchanging ideas with industry experts and fellow professionals.

Within the last three years, POLYMAT has been hosting students from University of Alabama as part of the program “Macromolecular and Polymer Research Experience in San Sebastian” (IMPRESS). This program, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and housed by the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the University of Alabama (UA) has been coordinated by Prof. Jason E. Bara (UA) and managed by Prof. David Mecerreyes (POLYMAT). This International Research Experience for Students (IRES) has recruited 21 undergraduate students from the @univofalabama along the 3 program years to participate in 8-week research experiences focused on macromolecular and polymer materials under the supervision of researchers from POLYMAT and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Marcelo Calderón, a researcher at POLYMAT, has been awarded a prestigious Leonardo Grant by the BBVA Foundation. This grant, in the area of Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), is part of the 2024 call and supports Calderón's project titled Therapeutic Dry Supramolecular Bioadhesives for Tissue Repair. Researchers from the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Plastics, University of Oxford, have described ambitious targets to help deliver a sustainable plastic economy. The team includes Dr. Fernando Vidal, who signs as first-author, and is currently a senior postdoctoral researcher at POLYMAT. In a paper published in Nature, the authors analyse the necessary changes to our current technical, economic, and policy paradigms in order to mitigate carbon emissions and uncontrolled pollution from the plastic industry. The study includes a future scenario centred on four targets: cut demand by 50%; phase-out fossil-derived plastics in exchange for biomass alternatives; maximize recycling rates up to 95% of collected plastics; and do so while minimizing any negative environmental impacts. The authors go beyond in describing the future roadmap of interventions to help deliver these targets. Importantly, action must occur across all four target areas to ensure the global plastics systems curbs its climate impacts and meets UN Sustainable Development Goals. Read more

Danila Merino is one of the awardees of the Fellows Gipuzkoa Programme.

Four new high-level researchers have joined the Gipuzkoa R&D ecosystem through the Fellows Gipuzkoa grants programme for the year 2023.

Yesterday, the working meeting took place where the provincial officials had the opportunity to go into the details of the projects that are being carried out.

Among the researchers, Danila Merino stands out, who contributes to the vibrant research landscape promoted by the programme with her research project on the valorisation of non-edible, highly available and low-cost vegetable waste to prepare bioplastics that represent an alternative to the petroleum-based polymers traditionally used for agricultural use and in packaging applications. In a study led by CSIC researcher Juan F. Vega in collaboration with POLYMAT researchers
(Itxaso Calafel, Mercedes Fernandez) and researchers from UPV/EHU and Donostia Hospital,
the complex properties of human tears have been studied to enhance the treatment of dry
eye syndrome. Compared to artificial tears, human tears consist of a complex mixture of lipids,
carbohydrates, proteins, water, and salt, making them unique in keeping our eyes hydrated

The photograph has been submitted to the category of "Sustainability, polymer valorization and polymer recycling."

In the image you can see what at first glance looks like a simple brick of milk, however, this material was obtained using the 3D printing technique of in-tank photopolymerisation. Specifically, the printed material is 80% skimmed milk, and the remaining 20% are some photopolymerisable monomers. Therefore, paradoxically, the milk brick shown in the image is mostly composed of milk.

Thus, by means of 3D printing, the aim is to give a second life to milk in poor condition or discarded, obtaining parts with very high resolution and very good mechanical properties. Read more

The Organic Batteries Days were held on 7-8 June at the Miramar Palace in Donostia-San Sebastian. This is an annual event of reference for organic battery experts organised by UPV/EHU and Polymat. 

The topics covered included the design and synthesis of organic electroactive materials, the study of these materials in various electrochemical systems (e.g. rechargeable batteries, flow batteries) and electrolytes for organic electrodes. Read more

Gipuzkoa's R&D&I ecosystem has incorporated 5 new high-level researchers through the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council's Fellows Gipuzkoa grant programme, the call for applications for which has recently been resolved. The Deputy General Markel Olano and the Deputy for Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects Jabier Larrañaga have received four of the new Fellows incorporations and the representatives of their respective centres, in a working meeting in which they have been able to learn first-hand about the content of the projects they are going to develop, and in which Olano has stressed the importance of continuing to promote talent and R&D&I in the territory. "Committing to science and research means committing to a strong and advanced economy, based on knowledge, and sowing the seeds for advances that improve people's health and wellbeing. In times of uncertainty like the ones we are living in, continuing to increase the excellence of our research ecosystem is essential to continue collectively building a better future," he said. The TheraTools project aims to develop new tools to advance research into one of the cancers with the worst possible prognosis, glioblastoma. It is a high-level research project supported by the second call of the European Marie Sklodowska Curie programme of Horizon Europe, a network that supports the training and professional development of pre-doctoral researchers from around the world through their participation in collaborative projects that address current and future societal challenges. The project has received €2.3 million in funding from the European Commission through this programme. Read more

The paper 'Can We Push Rapid Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerizations toward Immortality?' by POLYMAT researchers Dr. N. Ballard and Prof José M. Asua published in ACS Macro Letters has been selected as the ACS Editors’ Choice article. The paper shows that, contrary to the predictions of classical reaction kinetics, radical termination reactions can be substantially reduced in reversible deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs). This questions the commonly held assumptions of the limitations of RDRP processes and suggests the ability for a seemingly impossible level of control of radical reactions. Read more

Un proyecto de investigación coordinado por el grupo de Materiales Moleculares y Supramoleculares de POLYMAT-UPV/EHU ha sido financiado por la Unión Europea con 2.962.661 €. El proyecto, llamado 2D-INK, busca desarrollar tintas constituidas a partir de materiales derivados del grafeno con propiedades semiconductoras, que son las propiedades necesarias para el funcionamiento de dispositivos electrónicos. A partir de estas tintas semiconductoras se podrían fabricar dispositivos electrónicos ultrafinos (como transistores, leds y células solares) utilizando la misma tecnología de las impresoras de inyección de tinta actuales. BILBAO. Ya se conoce la especialidad y los responsables de los tres nuevos centros de investigación que pasarán a formar parte del sistema de ciencia vasco. Los tres centros que se pondrán en marcha son el Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC) de materiales, aplicaciones y nanoestructuras, que dirigirá José Manuel Barandiaran; el BERC de Neurociencia, a cargo de Carlos Matute; y el BERC de diseño macromolecular, con José Mª Asua como responsable. La presidenta del Patronato de Ikerbasque, la consejera de Educación Isabel Celaá, anunció ayer que la Fundación Ikerbasque ha iniciado los trámites correspondientes para poner en marcha tres nuevos centros.
