Defense of PhD Thesis – Emelin Yhoany Luna Barrios
Ms. Emelin Yhoany Luna Barrios will defend her PhD thesis, “Advancing the Recycling of Heteropolymers: Strategies Toward More Efficient and Sustainable Processes,” on Friday, February 20th, at 9:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Chemistry. Supervised by Prof. Dr. Haritz Sardon and Prof. Dr. Steven de Meester, the thesis explores innovative and sustainable strategies to enhance the recycling efficiency of heteropolymers, supporting the transition toward circular polymer technologies. The thesis committee will be chaired by Prof. Andres Fullana (Universidad de Alicante), with Prof. Lourdes Irusta (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea) as Secretary and Prof. Troels Skrydstrup (Aarhus Universitet) as Member. Defense of PhD Thesis – Aleksandar Sladojevic
Mr. Aleksandar Sladojevic will defend his PhD thesis, “Mechanisms, Kinetics and Control of Oxidation Processes Involving Vinyl and Acrylic Monomers,” on February 18th at 10:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Joxe Mari Korta Building. Supervised by Prof. Nicholas Ballard, the research provides an in-depth study of oxidation mechanisms and kinetics in vinyl and acrylic monomers, contributing to improved understanding and control of processes relevant to polymer synthesis and materials performance. The thesis committee will be chaired by Prof. Werner Pauer (Universität Hamburg), with Prof. Radmila Tomovska (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea) as Secretary and Prof. Mattia Sponchioni (Politecnico di Milano) as Member. School visits for 2026
School visits for 2026 have already started at POLYMAT. This week, we are welcoming students from Arizmendi Ikastola (Arrasate) as part of the Ikastola’s project-based learning approach. One of their annual projects focuses on developing a cream, making POLYMAT a perfect fit due to our extensive research on emulsions. During the visit, students attend a short introductory talk in our auditorium, followed by hands-on laboratory activities where they prepare an emulsion using water and oil, observe images obtained with the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and visit the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) facilities. Deployment of Bio-Based Protective Coatings on Offshore Floating Photovoltaic Structures
Last week, POLYMAT researchers (Aitor Barquero, Edurne González Gándara, Jose Ramon Leiza, Mario Martinez Yubero and Sara Rubio Murillo) were in Mutriku coating the floaters of the floating photovoltaic prototype developed within the NaturSea-PV project. The floaters were protected with bio-based, waterborne polymer coatings developed by the Polymerization Processes Group, specifically designed to withstand harsh marine conditions. Read more

Prof. María Paulis’ Inspiring Lecture at the Opening of the 2025–26 Academic Year at EHU
The University of the Basque Country opened the 2025–26 academic year with an inspiring ceremony. One of the most memorable moments came from Prof. Maria Paulis, Director of POLYMAT and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry, who delivered the inaugural lecture on the occasion of the faculty’s 50th anniversary.
Prof. Paulis illustrated how emulsion science symbolizes the power of collaboration—bringing together elements that seem incompatible to create something entirely new. She emphasized that true innovation emerges when diverse disciplines, cultures, and perspectives come together to solve complex challenges.

The Industrial Liaison Programme continues to play a central role in strengthening ties between POLYMAT and its industrial partners. POLYMAT co-organizes SOMMa 2025 Meeting on Scientific Excellence Management in Donostia
Donostia-San Sebastián is hosting SOMMa 2025, a national meeting on scientific excellence management that brings together over 70 project management leaders from research centers accredited with the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Seals of Excellence (CEX). The event is co-organized by POLYMAT, alongside BCBL, CIC nanoGUNE and DIPC—four centers of scientific excellence based in the Basque Country.
SOMMa (Alliance of Severo Ochoa Centers and María de Maeztu Units) aims to strengthen the international impact and visibility of research excellence in Spain. Course on Emulsion Polymerization Processes 2024
From September 9th to 13th, we had the privilege of hosting the Emulsion Polymerization Processes Course in the stunning city of Donostia-San Sebastián. This year's event brought together 47 attendees from 12 different countries, creating an enriching and diverse learning environment.
Participants had the opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of emulsion polymerization, expanding their knowledge and exchanging ideas with industry experts and fellow professionals.

Polymat hosts University of Alabama students for international polymer research program
Within the last three years, POLYMAT has been hosting students from University of Alabama as part of the program “Macromolecular and Polymer Research Experience in San Sebastian” (IMPRESS). This program, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and housed by the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the University of Alabama (UA) has been coordinated by Prof. Jason E. Bara (UA) and managed by Prof. David Mecerreyes (POLYMAT). This International Research Experience for Students (IRES) has recruited 21 undergraduate students from the @univofalabama along the 3 program years to participate in 8-week research experiences focused on macromolecular and polymer materials under the supervision of researchers from POLYMAT and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
