Prof. Radmila Tomovska is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at POLYMAT Fundazioa and the University of the Basque Country (EHU). She obtained her BSc, MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia. Her doctoral research, carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, focused on separation processes and chemical engineering. Following her PhD, she was awarded a NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship, during which she broadened her expertise towards laser-induced chemistry, nanostructured materials, chemical vapour deposition and polymer synthesis.
Since joining POLYMAT in 2009, Prof. Tomovska has developed an interdisciplinary research programme at the interface of chemical engineering, polymer chemistry and materials science. Her expertise lies in polymer colloids, emulsion polymerisation and polymer reaction engineering, with a particular focus on the design of sustainable functional materials for energy and environmental applications. Her current research interests include bio-based ionomers and membranes for electrochemical energy devices, functional and hybrid colloids, graphene-based porous materials for gas separation and CO₂ capture, advanced polymer composites, and multifunctional materials for catalysis, sensing and water treatment.
Throughout her career, she has coordinated and participated in numerous national and international research projects and has established long-standing collaborations with industrial partners, contributing to the translation of fundamental research into practical technologies. Since 2009, she has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Industrial Liaison Programme (ILP) on Dispersed Polymer Systems, an international consortium that brings together leading industrial companies and academic researchers to promote collaborative research in polymer colloids and emulsion polymerisation.
Training and mentoring young researchers has always been one of the most rewarding aspects of her academic career. She has supervised PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists from different countries and is committed to fostering scientific independence, critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration. She believes that curiosity, creativity and collaboration are essential to advancing both scientific knowledge and sustainable technologies.
