On 27 October, POLYMAT and Ikerbasque researcher Sandra Camarero-Espinosa was interviewed on Cadena SER by journalist Eva Monente about her research on joint regeneration.

Cartilage is the layer that cushions impacts and allows bones to glide smoothly when we move, but it has very little capacity to repair itself once it is damaged. Sandra creates materials that mimic cartilage so that they can later be introduced into the body to help regenerate our tissues.

Her research group develops gels that act as a “scaffold” for cells and studies how the small forces generated by ultrasound can stimulate these cells to produce new tissue. The aim is to move towards future ways of repairing cartilage damaged by injuries or by diseases such as osteoarthritis.

This research is still at an experimental stage, and it seeks to help the body rebuild its own tissues.
