SuperSuper: developing a new generation of superconducting materials

POLYMAT coordinates SuperSuper – Alternative Superconducting Superlattices, an international research project aimed at developing a new generation of superconducting materials through an innovative bottom-up chemical approach.
Moiré materials are emerging as a promising two-dimensional platform capable of exhibiting a wide range of electronic states, from superconducting to insulating behaviour. However, their development is currently limited by the lack of simple and general methods for producing these complex structures.
SuperSuper addresses this challenge by exploring the preparation of highly crystalline moiré materials based on two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs). The project aims to overcome the limitations of existing fabrication methods and establish a proof of principle for the technological potential of these materials. Its results contribute to advancing the understanding and design of synthetic twisted materials with moiré superlattices and potentially exotic electronic properties.
The project is coordinated by Prof. Aurelio Mateo-Alonso at POLYMAT and brings together an international and multidisciplinary consortium comprising:

- University of Aveiro, Portugal
- Graphenea Semiconductor S.L., Spain
- KU Leuven, Belgium
SuperSuper is funded under the M-ERA.NET Joint Call 2021, within the Functional Materials topic. The project runs from 1 November 2022 to 31 October 2025 and has total consortium funding of €986,902.
