High Performance Polymers

Waterborne composite polymer particles often improve several application properties compared to related single-phase latices or latex blends. These composite particles can range from hybrids of different polymer phases, to hybrids between inorganic nanoparticles and polymeric particles. The synthesis of such morphology controlled composite polymer particles is coupled with the study of their film formation abilities, and the morphology and final properties obtained in the dried film. In fact, these composite latexes can represent a way to overcome the film formation dilemma of waterborne coatings, resulting from the coupling between the polymer Tg and the minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) of the latex. Complementary techniques to obtain hard films by casting the coating at room temperature are also explored.
