Celebrating a Lifetime of Scientific Excellence: Prof. José M. Asua

Last Friday, the POLYMAT-EHU community came together in Donostia-San Sebastián to pay tribute to Prof. José M. Asua as he prepares to retire at the end of the summer, marking the conclusion of an exceptional scientific career that has had a profound impact on polymer science and generations of researchers.

The event was presented by Prof. María Paulis and Prof. Jose Ramon Leiza, who reflected on Prof. Asua’s outstanding contributions to research, education and scientific leadership. Throughout the ceremony, colleagues, collaborators, former students and friends shared personal stories and professional memories, highlighting both his scientific achievements and his lasting influence as a mentor.

The celebration also featured video messages from distinguished researchers around the world, including Patrick Lacroix-Desmazes, Alejandro J. Müller, David Sudol, Carlos Abad, Luis Javier González Ortiz, Claudia Sayer and Mehdi Naderi, among many others. Their contributions reflected the international recognition that Prof. Asua has earned throughout his career and the strong collaborations he has built across the global scientific community.

The tribute concluded with a reception where attendees had the opportunity to celebrate Prof. Asua’s remarkable legacy and wish him all the best for the next chapter of his life.
