Dr Leire Iturriaga earned her BSc degree in Chemistry (Organic) and MSc degree in New Materials from the University of the Basque Country. She carried out her thesis project about bio-based antimicrobial films and their modification for food preservation at AZTI-Tecnalia and obtained the PhD degree in Materials Science and Technology from the University of the Basque Country. After the PhD she has worked as researcher in two projects related to materials at the School of Engineering of Gipuzkoa (UPV/EHU), for the preparation of nanostructured materials from an unsaturated polyester resin using a block copolymer and the development of thermoplastic starch films and their nanocomposites by incorporating nanocrystals. She has also worked in cell therapy for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (School of Pharmacy, UPV/EHU) and in the synthesis of multivalent nanosystems for drug delivery (Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, IQAC-CSIC).

Her previous research has been focused on the development and characterization of (bio)polymeric materials, modification of the physico-chemical properties of the developed (bio)polymeric films by physical treatments, cell therapy and synthesis of multivalent nanosystems for drug delivery in cancer therapy. Her current research interests are focused on the development of biomaterials for biomedical applications.
